Frequently asked

Which tags work with Ink Tag?

Battery-free NFC e-ink tags, such as the popular 1.54 inch 200 by 200 pixel tags with black, white, yellow and red ink. Black and white tags work too. Ink Tag reads the screen size and colours from the tag when you send, so you do not need to set anything up. If your tag is not recognised, open Tag tools, scan it, and email us the details shown.

Which iPhones are supported?

Any iPhone that runs iOS 18 or later. Ink Tag is not available on iPad because iPad does not have NFC.

How do I send a picture?

Tap Send to my tag, then hold the top edge of your iPhone flat against the middle of the tag. Keep both still until Ink Tag says it has finished. The e-ink redraws in a few seconds and then keeps the picture with no power.

It says the tag was lost or the send failed

Take your iPhone out of a thick or metal case, lay the tag on a table, and hold the phone flat on top of it without moving. Try sliding the phone slowly around the tag to find the spot where it connects. If a send is interrupted, just send again: the tag will redraw from the start.

Why does my picture look different on the tag?

The tag can only show four inks, so colours like blue, green and skin tones are drawn with patterns of dots. Bold, simple photos with a clear subject work best. Try zooming in, raising the contrast, or turning dithering off for flat graphics. E-ink colours are also a little softer than a phone screen.

Does the tag need charging?

No. The tag has no battery. Your iPhone powers it over NFC while you send, and e-ink does not need power to keep showing a picture.

Does Ink Tag need the internet?

No. Ink Tag never connects to the internet. Everything, including converting your photos, happens on your iPhone.

What does Ink Tag do with my photos?

Nothing except send them to your tag. You pick a photo with Apple's photo picker, so the app never sees the rest of your library. The photo is converted on your iPhone, is not uploaded, and is not saved by the app. See the Privacy Policy.

Who is Inky?

Inky is the little e-ink tag who lives in the app. Inky shows you around, and Inky's photos, cartoon pals and designs are all made specially for four-colour e-ink.

Is Ink Tag made by the tag manufacturer?

No. Ink Tag is an independent app made by Eluma Labs in London. It is not affiliated with any tag maker.

How do I report a bug?

Email [email protected] with your iPhone model, the iOS version and what happened. If it involves a tag, open Tag tools, scan the tag, and include a screenshot of the screen details and log.
